Fake Drugs Increase Death Rate In Nigeria - Pharmacist
A pharmacist in Yaba area of Lagos state, Mr. Sola Adegbite, has attributed fake drugs as a major cause of high death rate in the country.
Expressing his dismay during a public function in Lagos State, Pharmacist Adegbite stated categorically that, fake drugs in circulation causes high death rate in the country and further increase medical flight to developed countries.
He explained that the standard organization of Nigeria (SON) was not doing enough towards ensuring that manufacturing companies produce high standard drugs that will be able to address health challenges in the country.
He revealed further that some individuals import expired drugs and repackaged them for the consumption of the people and this have adverse effect on the health of thousands of patients in the hospital, saying many people were not so lucky to survive the terror.
He hinted that 80 percent of malaria drugs in the country were fake and cannot compete globally, a development that has increased death rate in the country. He urged the federal government to train and retrain staff of the standard organization of Nigeria on global scale as this will equip them towards ensuring that quality products are produced for human consumption.
The Nigeria customs service where also admonished to do the needful by ensuring that fake drugs do not have access to the market so as to promote the people healthy living. It was revealed that some high-profile Nigerians travel abroad for medical care because of malaria illness that should be addressed by a functional health centre. He maintained that the welfare of health workers in Nigeria was poor, urging the government to improve their welfare package, saying that about 90 percent of health workers in Nigeria prefer to travel abroad for better remuneration and greener pasture.
He said fake malaria and typhoid drugs have taken over the market, while people die due illness that could be addressed by productive and effective medicines. He explained that the loopholes allowed producers of the fake drugs to smile to the banks while Nigerians and dying daily because of fake malaria and typhoid medicine they consume.
